Welcome Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Chemistry at Syracuse University. I hope that this Web site conveys the faculty's sense of excitement in this period of unprecedented expansion. The Department's commitment to excellence in all phases of scholarly activity is reflected in the caliber of the faculty, whose activities are profiled on the Web site.

While the Department is of medium size, it provides research opportunities in the traditional areas of chemistry, including inorganic, organic, physical, and theoretical, as well as emerging programs and collaborative undertakings in biomedical, materials, and environmental sciences. The Department has witnessed dynamic growth with the addition of eight faculty members in the past five years. Linked to this expansion has been the unveiling of plans to construct a $107-million Life Sciences Complex that will open in fall 2008. This 220,000-square foot building will provide an exciting new environment for chemistry and biology research and teaching, state-of-the-art laboratory design and technology, and ample space for collaborative and interdisciplinary research.

The exceptional human resources embodied by our faculty, combined with the dramatic expansion of our facilities, will guarantee the continuing excellence of our programs and professional accomplishments of our students. The links above provide details about teaching and research activities in the Department. Enjoy the virtual tour and catch the excitement.
