Welcome Message from the Chair

Syracuse University's commitment to excellence in teaching and research is reflected in a continued strong investment in the Chemistry department and it's mission. While medium in size, the Department represents research opportunities in the traditional areas of Chemistry, including inorganic, organic, physical and theoretical chemistry, in addition to several programs that cross the traditional boundaries between disciplines. Examples include programs in biomaterials, bioorganic, biophysical, bioinorganic and materials chemistry. Furthermore, many of the current and emerging programs are collaborative of nature, with close ties to the Physics, Biology and several engineering departments. Recent strategic investments such as the College's Visioning program, the Center of Excellence and the recent Biomaterials initiative are offering a range of unique research opportunities.

Aside from offering exciting research opportunities, we are proud of the unique training graduate students interested in a career in academia will receive. In collaboration with the Graduate School, the Future professoriate program prepares graduate students for classroom exposure to ensure a smooth transition from graduate school to academic classroom situations.

The Department has seen a dynamic growth with the hiring of eight faculty members over the seven years. Linked to the strong University commitment is the construction of the new $107-million dollar Life Sciences Building that not only provides state-of-the-art teaching laboratories, but catalyzes unique research collaborations, and thus research opportunities on the interface of Chemistry and Biology. This 220,000 square foot building was opened in the fall 2008.

The strong investment of the University towards the Chemistry department that enabled continued dynamic growth and exceptional facilities will guarantee the continuing excellence of our programs and accomplishments of our students. I invite you catch the excitement and be part of this vibrant program.
