Laura J and L Douglas Meredith Symposium in the Chemical and Biological Sciences

Oct 22, 2016, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM

Life Sciences Building Room 105

The symposium will feature eight, 25-minute presentations by undergraduate students who have conducted at least one full semester of research and who participate in, or are eligible for, the McNair Program or the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program at the University. We're happy to announce our keynote speakers: Dr. Nerissa Viola-Villegas G'09 of Karmanos Cancer Center, Detroit, MI, and Anna Kahkoska '13, who is now pursuing her MD/PhD at UNC Chapel Hill.

The symposium promotes the development of first-generation students as well as women in science while preparing them for future conference participation at the national level. There will be two awards for best presentations of $2,500 each to be used for conference travel and presentation, as well as three awards for best posters ($600, $300, $100).

Additional information about the event can be found here: http://meredithsymposium.syr.edu/about.html

Giovanna Ghirlanda Ph.D.

Oct 18, 2016, 3:45 PM-6:00 PM

1-019 CST

Giovanna Ghirlanda Ph.D.  is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Arizona State University. Where her research group uses de novo design and protein engineering to prepare artificial model proteins that can perform a desired function. The purpose of this effort is twofold: first, by reproducing the main properties and functions of natural proteins in a model system, one can test iteratively hypotheses on the specific contribution of each amino acid to the protein activity; second, once the key principles are elucidated, it will be possible to design novel proteins with activities beyond those of natural proteins. Methods utilized include computational modeling, solid phase synthesis, molecular biology techniques and enzymatic screening.
