Our group is interested in developing novel multifunctional nanomaterials and bionanomaterials and investigating their properties and potential applications for catalysis, nanoelectronics, medical and biological applications, solar cells, and environmental remediation. The multifunctional nanomaterials include nanoparticles, nanowires, nanopatterns, nanocomposites and nanoporous materials. By introducing two or more functional groups into the materials, we introduce multiple properties or create superior structure-property relationships within the materials. By using their unique properties, we demonstrate proof-of-concept potential applications of our nanomaterials for efficient catalysis of various chemical transformations, for biosensing, and targeted drug delivery applications, for catalytic degradation of pollutants and environmental remediation of waste water such as Onondaga Lake, and for making efficient solar-cells and nanoelectronics devices. Our synthetic approaches combine "bottom-up" synthetic methods involving solution phase synthesis, self-assembly and electrochemical deposition and "top-down" synthetic methods involving nanolithography and templating within nanoporous "hard-templates" or on the patterned 2-D substrates.
